UNMASKED:
A Sober Purim of Joy
Presented by 14Y Selah in partnership with JACS of the Jewish Board
Purim is a holiday of reversals hidden becomes revealed, fear turns to courage, and the world flips upside down. Traditionally, joy on Purim has often been linked to drinking. At Selah, we offer a different invitation:
What does joy look like when we stay present?
UNMASKED: A Sober Purim of Joy is a recovery-informed celebration rooted in Jewish tradition, honest storytelling, and embodied joy. This evening invites participants to celebrate without self-abandonment to experience connection, play, and freedom without numbing out.
You are welcome to join for one part of the evening or stay for the full experience.

Program Flow:
-
Purim Story recreation: Hidden to Revealed
We begin with a Purim story recreation, grounding the evening in the Purim narrative, a story where God’s presence is hidden, courage emerges quietly, and transformation unfolds through small, brave acts. This moment invites reflection on what we hide, what protects us, and what it means to be seen.
-
Story Spotlight: Recovery in Jewish Life
A story spotlight from Ben of 14Y Selah centers lived experience and recovery wisdom, highlighting how community, honesty, and support make healing possible. Storytelling becomes a ritual of connection rather than escape.
-
Ecstatic Dance: Turning Joy Inside Out
The evening culminates in an ecstatic dance experience, offering a way to access joy through movement, breath, and rhythm rather than intoxication. Movement is always optional. Witnessing is participation.
